Solar Panels Providing a Whole House with Energy

Running parts of your house off of solar energy can save money

Building or installing enough solar panels to generate power for all the appliances in your home can be costly, and maybe a little daunting. However, installing some smaller solar panels that would, say, heat your water or run your furnace motor may be more reasonable, and save money over time.

For example, solar yard lights have solar cells that measure two inches by .5 (1/2) inch. This size of cell can produce .45 volts and 100 amps, or 45 milliwatts, in one square inch. This number can be used to formulate how many cells and the size of cells that are needed to "run" your house. Then, you need to decide how much sunlight will actually be "captured" in the cells, by climate and location. You may only be able to capture the maximum amount of sunlight for an average of 4-5 hours per day, in the summer. This will need to be taken into account.

Justifying the cost of a solar power system has a lot of aspects. Purchasing power from an electric company, right now, is about 24 cents per kilowatt hour, or about $91.00 per month. Is it worth it to you?
