Why Battery Banks are Necessary for Stand Alone Systems
In a stand alone energy system, there must be a way to save the energy that has been created. This energy can then be used when it is dark or there is a cloud cover. This can be accomplished either electrochemically by using batteries or in some other form. Storage always has an extra stage of conversion, thus decreasing the efficiency of the energy. This can increase costs. One way around this is to export the excess power to the grid, thus using the grid as the battery and being able to use it later.
