Solar Water Heaters Have Been Around Since 1890

Did you know that "solar water heaters" were used as early as 1890? They were rather primitive, in that they were a tub or other large container for water that was placed on the roof of the house to heat water. But they were more efficient than coal or wood burning stoves. There was little or no electricity available and if they could get "natural gas", it was very expensive.

In 1897, 30% of the homes in Pasadena , California used solar water heaters. As the systems improved, more people were able to use it in the more sunny parts of the United States.
