Thermal Solar and Electrical Solar Panels are Different

Solar panels are devices that take the sunshine and turn it into usable energy in our homes. They are usually placed on the roof of the house. The two main purposes of solar energy are to heat your water and produce electricity.

Solar panels that are designed specifically to heat water are called thermal solar systems, and solar panels that are designed to produce electricity are called photovoltaic panels.

Panels are used differently, depending on what they are designed to do. If you want a solar water heating system, it requires a collector of some sort. This absorbs solar radiation, heating a liquid that is transported from the collector to the water tank.

In an electricity-producing panel, sunlight helps create an electric charge in a silicon sheet and a conductive metal can carry the power to the house.

The advantages of solar power are that it is renewable, clean, non-polluting and becoming less expensive all the time, and it is shining down on us every day.

There are many factors in determining how solar power can help you.

  • How much electricity do you use in a year?
  • How much sun is there where you live?
  • The price of other forms of power, including electricity on the grid, wind, hydropower, etc.
  • The price of solar panels and the efficiency rate of what you choose

The average length of time for a solar panel to pay for itself is five years.
