Water Desalination and Distillation

Treating Water using Solar Power to Clean it up

Water can be distilled by using the sun. Salt water or brackish water may me made drinkable by solar distillation. The first recorded use of this type of distillation was in the 16th century by Arab alchemists. It was used again in 1872 in a Chilean mining town. Many types of stills can be manufactured, and include single-slope, double-slope, vertical, conical, and several others. These stills can operate either in a passive setting or active or even hybrid. Double slope stills are most economical for domestic purposes.

Solar water disinfection (SODIS) is a method used to disinfect water by putting the water in a plastic PET bottle and then letting it sit in the sun for a minimum of six hours and a maximum of two days(If it is overcast). SODIS is recommended as a safe way for household water treatment and storage.
