Passive solar is a term used to describe the use of solar power that doesn't require mechanical systems. Passive solar technology can help to heat a home by simple means, such as adding a "solarium" to the side of your house. You can build a solarium on the equator side of your home using brick or other heat conducting material and glass or plastic to let the sun shine in. This system usually uses a second layer of glass between the outside glass and the interior room. It creates a thermal buffer zone. This can reduce heating costs in the winter by letting the sun heat your room. There are also shades that can be drawn to keep it cool in the summer months when the heat may not be wanted.
